What Is Canine Bodywork?
Canine bodywork is a therapeutic, hands-on approach that focuses on improving a dog’s comfort, movement, and overall well-being through soft-tissue techniques. It’s a gentle, non-invasive practice that targets the muscles, fascia (connective tissue), tendons, and ligaments helping restore balance and ease throughout the body.
At its core, bodywork is about communication and consent. Each session is guided by the dog their comfort level, their posture, their reactions. Every touch is intentional, allowing the practitioner to feel restrictions, tension, or imbalances in the tissues, and to gently encourage release where the body needs it most.
🐾 How It Works
Bodywork uses a combination of slow, rhythmic strokes, holds, and stretches to:
-
Increase circulation, which brings oxygen and nutrients to muscles and tissues.
-
Support lymphatic drainage, helping the body naturally reduce inflammation and clear toxins.
-
Release muscle tension and adhesions that limit flexibility or cause discomfort.
-
Stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging relaxation and reducing stress.
-
Promote better body awareness (proprioception) so dogs can move with confidence and control.
Each session is customized to the individual dog’s needs. Some may benefit from gentle relaxation work, while others need deeper focus on areas of chronic tightness or compensation caused by injury, arthritis, or repetitive motion from sports and play.

Benefits of Bodywork
Canine bodywork can help dogs of all ages, sizes, and lifestyles:

Puppies & Young Dogs: Encourages healthy growth, body awareness, and balanced movement.
-
Active & Sporting Dogs: Supports performance, recovery, and injury prevention.
-
Senior Dogs: Reduces stiffness, promotes mobility, and provides comfort in aging bodies.
-
Companion Dogs: Relieves tension, reduces stress, and enhances emotional well-being.
-
Rehabilitation & Post-Surgery Dogs: Complements veterinary physiotherapy to restore strength and flexibility safely.
The B&N Wellness Approach
At B&N Wellness, bodywork is rooted in trust, compassion, and science. Every session is performed in a calm, low-stress environment where dogs are free to move, sniff, or even walk away when they need space. This “consent-based” approach helps build confidence and creates a deeper level of communication between practitioner and dog.
Melissa combines her education through the Canadian Institute of Equine and Canine Body Works (CIECBW) Canada’s only provider of the world-renowned Equinology® and Caninology® programs with her personal experience helping her own dog, Bentley, manage chronic pain. Her sessions emphasize anatomical understanding, mindful touch, and emotional connection.
Bodywork and Veterinary Care
Canine bodywork does not replace veterinary treatment - it complements it.
We believe in a team-based approach, working alongside your veterinarian, chiropractor, or physiotherapist to support your dog’s long-term wellness goals.
While veterinarians focus on diagnosing and treating medical issues, bodywork supports the tissues and movement that surround those issues, helping the body function more efficiently and comfortably.
In Short
Bodywork is the art and science of helping dogs feel better through compassionate touch and informed intention. It’s where anatomy meets empathy, and where every session becomes a chance to restore balance, ease, and joy in your dog’s body.
Because at B&N Wellness, every touch has a purpose and every dog deserves to feel their best.

About us

Gentle Hands. Balanced Bodies. Happier Lives.
At B&N Wellness, we believe every dog deserves to move comfortably, rest deeply, and feel truly seen. Our mission is to provide compassionate, consent-based bodywork that helps dogs find balance, comfort, and a better quality of life no matter their age or activity level.
B&N Wellness was founded by Melissa Vogels, a lifelong dog lover who began this journey because of her heart dog, Bentley. Bentley has been Melissa’s partner through everything a retired weight-pull competitor with the biggest heart and an unbreakable spirit. But when Bentley was diagnosed with moderate hip dysplasia, lower spine spondylosis (arthritis), and later underwent a multi-mass lumpectomy after surviving cancer, life changed.
Despite regular chiropractic visits, acupuncture, and physiotherapy, Bentley continued to show signs of pain and discomfort. Melissa found herself searching for something more a way to truly help him feel better. That’s when a dear friend shared the Canadian Institute of Equine and Canine Body Works (CIECBW), Canada’s only provider of the world-renowned Equinology® and Caninology® programs, after some of her own digging Melissa was hooked, and immediately started her jounrey.
What began as a desperate attempt to ease her own dog’s pain quickly became a calling. Through her training, Melissa learned just how much skilled touch, anatomy knowledge, and intentional bodywork can do not just for Bentley, but for all dogs.
And so, B&N Wellness was born named after Bentley and Nelli, the two dogs who inspired it all. Nelli, a driven and joyful sport dog, reminds Melissa daily of the importance of recovery, balance, and the joy of movement.
Today, B&N Wellness stands as a space where heart and science meet. Each session is built on trust, consent, and understanding, and every dog is treated as an individual whether they’re an active athlete, a senior companion, or a dog recovering from injury or illness.
Melissa works closely with veterinarians, chiropractors, and other canine professionals as part of a team approach to overall health and wellness. Her goal is simple yet powerful:
To help dogs move freely, live comfortably, and feel loved through every gentle touch. 💚
Because at B&N Wellness, this isn’t just about massage it’s about hope, healing, and giving back to the dogs who give us everything
